What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Mode S transponders give more details including call signs and positions which are useful in airspace that is congested.

A common sight is a small beige box beneath a pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. It is a transponder, and it is set to transmit an SQUAWK code whenever the airplane is activated by air traffic control. The transponder is set to be in the 'ON' position, ALT position, or SBY (standby) position.
